Reviews

The game puts you in the hefty role of Thora, a Viking woman who hasn’t been having the best of times lately. She’s recently died, you see, and naturally she’s a little cranky about the unpleasantness. Worse, because it was considered an inglorious death – a storm sank her ship and she drowned – she hasn’t yet had a chance to enter Valhalla, a paradise for heroes who die in battle.

Thora, however, still has hope. When she awakens in the Norse version of Purgatory called Ginnungagap (the Void), she finds that if she can pass through each of her realms and defeat the Jotuns found in each, she will impress the gods enough to gain access to Valhalla anyway.  The goal, then, is to travel from Ginnungagap (which functions as the main world) to five different regions, each of which contains several stages. After finding and activating a rune placed in each of these stages, you then face off against the giant Jotun from that region in a boss battle. If you defeat them all, you’ll be on your way to Valhalla.

This structure results in a slightly disjointed experience, though not necessarily a bad one. The two stages in each region tend to be fairly sparse, and with a few exceptions, encounters with enemies are basically a rarity. So most of these stages are instead spent exploring the environment and searching for the rune you need to unlock the boss fight.
