Review
This arcade title throws players headfirst into the Zombie Pets Tournament. It pits dogs, cats, raccoons and other animals against each other on Pet Island, where they must don boxing gloves and defeat their opponents in one-on-one fights. Players won’t be trading blows, however; the ultimate goal is to get a super-strong disc from your side into your opponent’s goal. Whoever gets through three rounds wins, and the winner moves on to the next duel.
The primary action of the players is the attack button, which they use to deliver blows to the disc. This can be angled for a perfect strike; just what is needed to break through the opponents‘ defenses. One also has the dash move, which temporarily increases speed. There is also a superattack that can be used after the meter is fully charged, allowing for trick shots. These mechanics are nothing special, but they get the job done. The game isn’t nearly as fluid as its predecessor – expect a few missed shots and the occasional disc hit to the face – but proper rallies make sure the action is intense.
The same goes for each of its scenes. A host of hazards await, from darkened arenas illuminated by lightning to heavy bumper-to-bumper battles that wreak utter havoc. Learning how to fight each arena is just as crucial as understanding your opponent, the hazards and everything else. Some are designed better than others, but learning which blocks to break and which parts of the scene to focus on is a much-needed learning curve.
It’s just a shame that Pets No More is a little skeletal. Those travelling solo can dive into its arcade mode, which features a set number of fights against various AI opponents. For those who’d like to bring a friend along, there’s a Versus mode in which players can choose any combination of characters and stages. Don’t expect any modifiers or anything that might change the rules – what you see is what you get.
